Why bronze costs what it does

A plated lever and a solid bronze lever look similar on a drawing and behave nothing alike after ten years of use. Plating wears through at the thumb and the palm. Bronze does not — it changes colour and keeps going.

On an entry door, which is the first thing anyone touches, that difference is the whole argument.
